Genre: Strategy Name: Age of Empires II
Rating: 8.8
Retail Price: $49.99/Our Price: $0
Age of Empires II still appears to operate very much like its predecessor. Each round revolves around collecting as many of the four basic resources (wood, food, gold and stone) as you can and using them to build an army to destroy your enemy. The units that you build this army out of are, with one new exception, still split into four basic types – cavalry, archers, infantry and siege engines. As you advance through the various ages, you'll have the power to improve each one of these four unit types with new technologies and training styles.

Genre: Action Name: Alien Vs Predator
Rating: 8.0
Retail Price: $49.99/Our Price: $0
The most stunning achievement in AvP is that it allows for three totally separate styles of gameplay. As the name implies, you can join the fray as either an Alien or Predator. But you can also opt to take on the other-worlders as a Colonial Marine. Each character has it's own unique levels, objectives and game stylings. This variety of characters and gameplay is incredibly refreshing in a genre that is flooded with clones and remakes that are hardly worth the shelf space they occupy.

The initial press of Homeworld painted a picture of the next logical progression of strategy games -- 3D. Free-form space environments would be the games most daunting task, especially in a genre that was complicated enough when you were looking down at model-sized objects, let alone an entire world of spacecraft and gunfire. As details were released, the concepts behind Homeworld began to take form, and what appeared was something much larger than expected. Hundreds of ships could be focused on in a giant battle, or you could zoom in to a specific ship to watch the action up close.

There are ten different cars to choose from in Motorhead. Initially only three are available. You earn the opportunity to race in the other cars by finishing league races. Each car is rated in three performance areas—speed, acceleration and grip. There’s a pretty fair mix here of the different possible configurations. You can also choose to drive each car with an automatic or manual transmission. Manual shifting is fairly straightforward. Luckily there’s no clutch so you can shift up or down at the touch of a button.

Get the shiny beast on the freeway though, and you'll find that though it runs nice, it feels a lot more like a station wagon than a sports coupe. Need for Speed has an unfortunate EA curse -- it's pretty, it's slick, but it's nothing new. This is certainly not a step down from NFS III, but at times it's hard to differentiate between the two, despite some appealing new additions to the formula.

While looking for your friends and attempting to complete your supreme quest, you will be given many smaller quests by the inhabitants of Uimoir. The first of these leads you to the town of Plagat, which becomes your base of operations for most of the game. In the town, you can buy and sell items, train your characters, and hire mercenaries to beef-up your party. In theory, all of this sounds pretty good. You've got magic, you've got intrigue . . . but RoM fails to offer anything new to the RPG genre and its quirky and, frankly, boring gameplay leaves much to be desired.

The basic premise of this game is that the cars are totally indestructible. No matter what you do to them, they just keep going. One of the better adventure games released in recent years. The game’s storyline is entertaining start to finish, and getting more and more strange as the game wears on. Birth of the Federation features some really cool-looking interface screens that are designed to match the culture they represent. The Federation interface uses the same screens that we're used to seeing on board the Enterprise, the Klingons use a spiky multi-level interface that looks just like what we've seen on board their ships over the years and so one. Unfortunately, while each of these interfaces do a fantastic job of looking good, they're not worth a damn when it comes to controlling large fleets, massive amounts of resources or the demands of an army of diplomats.

The game has also had a very minor facelift. You'll mostly be impressed with the new look of the terrain. Craters are formed from explosions. There are also numerous "neutral" structures around and even a few modestly sized cities. The cities add ambushes to the tactical palette of the game. There are also bridges which can be destroyed and repaired. I think the game relies a little too heavily on bridges; there are quite a few in each mission. One cool addition is the ability to destroy bridges while units are on them. Oh, that's too bad…bye-bye!
